MOSS Sponsorship

Wed 16.03.16

Workers from Hacer Group's Nord Apartments site in North Melbourne banded together to help raise funds for the Merri Outreach Support Service in Broadmeadows. Jessica Little, Children’s Specialist Case Manager, received the Hacer Group sponsorship cheque from Hacer's Project Manager, Frank D'Annibale, and site team members Derek Darmanin and HSR Matt Seadon. The site raised an overall total of $5,250.

"The generous donation from Hacer and Union workers supports the MOSS Bright Futures Children’s Specialist program, which provides children’s case management and therapeutic interventions for infants, children and adolescents who have experienced homelessness and family violence," said Jessica.

"As well as providing year-round, tailored support for children and their families, the Bright Futures Summer Camp is an important and fun part of our program. This January we were able to take nine children to the coast for three days. As many of the kids have experienced trauma and have complex needs, it was really important that we could afford to book out the camp site just for our group, and give them a safe and contained experience with four workers they knew and trusted. There was no cost to the families, which meant that some kids who otherwise would not have had a summer holiday were able to come along.

"A few of the kids had never been to the beach before, but they all took to it with enthusiasm and new found skills. One eight year old boy showed a natural talent for surfing the first time he tried it!  Activities included: a surfing /body boarding lesson, a low ropes course, a bush walk, feeding farm animals, fish and chips at the beach, a sand building competition, a movie night, air hockey and table tennis, arts, crafts and board games, and making a photo book of the experience.  We provided wholesome, home-cooked meals and plenty of attention if a child felt homesick or unsure. At the end of the camp we had some happily exhausted kids, and thanks to the generosity of Hacer and Union workers, they got to experience a classic Australian summer holiday."
