A $37 million revamp of Lansell Square is a step closer after the appointment of the Hacer Group as builder. The development will see a 4,300 square metre Coles supermarket and 18 specialty stores added to the site, along with additional car parking. Charter Hall development manager Will Green said the appointment was an important milestone for the project.
“Lansell Square is an important centre for Charter Hall and the local area, and through these expansion and redevelopment works, we are committed to creating an even better shopping environment for the local community and creating opportunities for existing and new retail businesses," he said.
Construction is expected to start at the end of the month and be finished in May 2015.
Charter Hall had planned to start works in the middle of this year, which was delayed as the company searched for a builder.
The company had also hoped to have the works completed mid-2014.
The City of Greater Bendigo gave the project planning approval in November last year.
Councillor Lisa Ruffell, who was mayor at the time, said the development would be positive for the city.
“I think it’s a brilliant thing for Bendigo; it’s 175 jobs we’re going to be creating,” she said.
“It’s a growth centre and we need to be proud of the developments that come to us. It will take some people away from places like Hargreaves Mall, the Marketplace and Strath Village, but we can’t stop projects like these. We’ve got to embrace them and make areas stand out on their own.”
