Around the Bay 2018

Tue 09.10.18

Team Hacer took to their bikes to partake in the annual Around the Bay cycling challenge on Sunday 7 October 2018. This event is Australia's biggest one-day bike ride where participants chose from several rides such as the 100km Frankston return or the 210km Sorrento return. Not only is the event a great experience to celebrate cycling and gain a unique perspective of our city, but it's all for a worthy cause. In Australia, 1 in 7 children are growing up in disadvantaged homes, where even the basics in life are hard to come by. The Smith Family event raises funds to help empower kids in need so they can create a better future for themselves through education. Donations will give these children essentials like school books, bags, uniforms, shoes and the help they need to keep up at school. Here's what one of our annual riders Darren McErlain said about the day:

"The weather for Around the Bay ride couldn't have been better, Spring had finally arrived! The ride began at Albert Park Lake with a small hitch when Kevin’s bike decided not to change gears. A loose cable was reconnected and we were quickly on our way!

The first group to finish their ride included Kevin, Jacob and James which ended at Sandringham. It was great to see Kevin join in on the ride, great effort.

Dario, Paul, Ivan and I continued on our way towards Frankston. It was here we had a quick break, Port Phillip Bay was at it's best. No wind and flat as a mill pond. From Frankston, Dario and I returned to Melbourne to complete the 100km ride. Paul and Ivan continued their ride to Sorrento and returned to complete the 210km ride. Honours go to Paul and Ivan, great effort.

Winston didn't start with the group but I can vouch for him, he did ride as we spotted him on our return.

It's always a nice feeling to complete a long ride. What I probably enjoyed most was the souvlaki from the Greek street food van at the finishing point. It tasted soooo good! I’m sure Ivan’s and Paul’s tasted better after smashing out 210km. It was a great day."

Well done to our lads, it was a huge effort and Hacer are very proud of you all!
